Can an EMP caused by solar flares fry electronics globally?

I've been researching the effects that electromagnetic pulses have on basic electronic devises (cellphones, computers, cameras, etc.). And now I understand that certain flares from the sun can induce EMPs. If this is true, depending on the direction and how sever the the flare is, could electronics on earth be fried? If so, is there any way to protect against this?
