A question about hell (the lake of fire)?

There is no need for torment. God could just allow their spirit to die. I really don't understand how heaven could be that great if family members and friends may not get to be in heaven simply for not believing while on earth. That does not make a lot of sense does it? It also seems like a lot of christians like the idea of hell. They almost drool as they tell you're going to hell. Does that make them evil?
