What is the real job of religions, and does it ever get fulfilled?

I find religion very interesting for reasons i cant go into ;good i hope :)(. but it appears they all fall short of enlightening the mes, they get corrupted or they,re misunderstood or impossible to transpire the message through writing mayb. so what is their role if any.i am not saying god doesnt exist!
